British Columbia, Canada, 15-22 September 2004 : The legendary Jacques Cousteau considered that the nutrient-rich, current-swept waters between Vancouver Island and mainland BC offer the best cold-water diving in the world. Certainly, it's hard to imagine anywhere else outside the tropics with as much life and colour. This was my third trip to dive the Emerald Sea. This time, three friends and I went to Quadra Island, just off Campbell River, about half way up the East side of Vancouver Island. We stayed and dived with DynaMike Dive Charters, which I can thoroughly recommend. http://www.divedynamike.com/index.html
The convivial owner/skipper, Mike Richmond, knows these waters like the back of his hand and his charming wife Darlene prepares three delicious meals a day for their guests. Nothing is too much trouble for Mike and Darl.
Land photos from the same trip may be seen here:

Ladders for dive-boats : A ladder for a dive-boat should be long, so that it goes well below the surface - you should be able to step right onto it without pulling yourself up - should slope outwards, not hang straight down, should have flat rungs with a stopper at the end (so that you don't slip off) and should extend well above the dive-platform and have proper handles at the top. Unfortunately, few dive-boats have a good ladder. Note that this is a safety issue as much as a convenience issue. These drawings, borrowed from http://www.cisatlantic.com/trimix/ , show examples of two types of good ladders - an economy version and a de luxe version.

Narvik, Norway, 27-29 August 2004 : Narvik, in northern Norway, being ice-free all year round, is the main port for shipment of iron ore from the Swedish mines in Kiruna. Access to high-quality iron ore was crucial to Germany's war effort and one of Hitler's primary objectives in the invasion of Norway in April 1940 was therefore to secure Narvik. The allies were naturally anxious to prevent this and the result was two major naval battles, the First and Second Battle of Narvik, on 9-10 and 13 April 1940 respectively. You can read an abbreviated version of the whole story here: http://www.immersed.com/Articles/narvik__norway.htm
Today, Narvik is a mecca for wreck divers as the wrecks are almost all within sports diving limits and the visibility is excellent, 10 metres at worst and 25-30 metres at best when I was there. The wrecks are still well preserved after more than 60 years and are covered with life.
