Your Bio

Hello and welcome to my photo galleries, where you can see my underwater photos taken on the west coast of Sweden, where I have lived since 1968, and on diving trips abroad. I've dived since 1988 but am relatively new to underwater photography, which has added a new dimension to my diving. I started with Sea & Sea's simplest point and shoot camera (MX-5) and then progressed, in September 2003, to a Motormarine II EX with dual YS60TTL strobes, 1:2 and 1:3 macro lenses and 20mm and 16mm wide angle. The u/w photos in my Excel gallery were taken with the MX-5, all others up until July 2005 with the MM II EX unless otherwise stated .
In July 2005 I bought a complete used Nikonos V kit with extension tubes, various lenses and an SB105 strobe. I later bought another Nik V body as back-up, as well as more lenses, more extension tubes, various viewfinders and four more strobes. In July 2006 I started using dual strobes, which I find makes it easier to light the image evenly. I also bought a used Nikkor 15mm lens, the finest u/w lens ever made, according to some of the world's top photographers, and a Sea & Sea 12mm fisheye lens.
In the autumn of 2007 I sold my much-loved Nikonos V’s and bought a used Nikon F80/N80 SLR film camera with an Ikelite underwater housing. I loved the camera but didnt like the housing, so I sold it and bought a used Sea & Sea housing. I also bought a used Nikon F100 (a professional 35 mm SLR camera) and Sea & Sea housing.
In May 2009 I finally went digital. I bought a used Sea & Sea DX-D50 underwater housing on e-bay and a used Nikon D50 here in Sweden. 6.1 MP is plenty for my purposes - my pictures look great on a 42" HD TV screen - and, although the camera lacks some of the features of the more expensive digital SLR's, it has everything I need to photograph underwater. I own the following lenses: An AF Micro-Nikkor 60mm f2.8D for use in our turbid northern waters, an AF MicroNikkor 105mm f2.8D for use in clear tropical waters and a Sigma 10-20mm F4.5-5.6 EX DC for wide-angle work. The Sigma 10-20mm has its limitations on land but produces excellent images in a dome port under water. I also have an AF-S Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G ED II (one of the 10 best lenses Nikon ever made, despite the ridiculously low price, according to Ken Rockwell) for use on land. I use Photoshop Elements 6 to edit the images.

British Columbia, Canada, 15-22 September 2004 : The legendary Jacques Cousteau considered that the nutrient-rich, current-swept waters between Vancouver Island and mainland BC offer the best cold-water diving in the world. Certainly, it's hard to imagine anywhere else outside the tropics with as much life and colour. This was my third trip to dive the Emerald Sea. This time, three friends and I went to Quadra Island, just off Campbell River, about half way up the East side of Vancouver Island. We stayed and dived with DynaMike Dive Charters, which I can thoroughly recommend. http://www.divedynamike.com/index.html
The convivial owner/skipper, Mike Richmond, knows these waters like the back of his hand and his charming wife Darlene prepares three delicious meals a day for their guests. Nothing is too much trouble for Mike and Darl.
Land photos from the same trip may be seen here:

Ladders for dive-boats : A ladder for a dive-boat should be long, so that it goes well below the surface - you should be able to step right onto it without pulling yourself up - should slope outwards, not hang straight down, should have flat rungs with a stopper at the end (so that you don't slip off) and should extend well above the dive-platform and have proper handles at the top. Unfortunately, few dive-boats have a good ladder. Note that this is a safety issue as much as a convenience issue. These drawings, borrowed from http://www.cisatlantic.com/trimix/ , show examples of two types of good ladders - an economy version and a de luxe version.

Narvik, Norway, 27-29 August 2004 : Narvik, in northern Norway, being ice-free all year round, is the main port for shipment of iron ore from the Swedish mines in Kiruna. Access to high-quality iron ore was crucial to Germany's war effort and one of Hitler's primary objectives in the invasion of Norway in April 1940 was therefore to secure Narvik. The allies were naturally anxious to prevent this and the result was two major naval battles, the First and Second Battle of Narvik, on 9-10 and 13 April 1940 respectively. You can read an abbreviated version of the whole story here: http://www.immersed.com/Articles/narvik__norway.htm
Today, Narvik is a mecca for wreck divers as the wrecks are almost all within sports diving limits and the visibility is excellent, 10 metres at worst and 25-30 metres at best when I was there. The wrecks are still well preserved after more than 60 years and are covered with life.
